At FHNI we don't check the qualifications of people on our register - simply because there are so many different types of businesses on here, and they are all regulated and qualified in different ways. It's up to the buyer of the service (that's you) to check them out and make sure they are right for you, and also that they are a reputable provider. Just like we would if we were choosing a new insurance provider or accountant.
Counsellors
The term 'counsellor' or 'therapist' are not protected terms, so anyone can use them to describe themselves. However, counsellors in NI should be registered with a professional body which is accountable to the PSA (Professional Standards Authority) such as UKCP, NCPS, BACP or HCPC, as examples. Here are some questions to ask to make sure you are finding a safe, ethical and appropriately qualified professional:
- Ask if they are registered with a governing body like NCPS or BACP for counsellors (you can even check their membership code on those bodies websites) or another body.
- Ask for copies of their insurance and check it is up to date
- Ask for any reviews or testimonials, or search them up online or on social media.
- Ask for copies of qualification certificates
Remember - any ethical and decent practitioner or business will be more than happy to answer your questions or provide you with this information.
Holistics
Apart from chiropractic, there is no professional regulation of complementary and alternative (holistic) treatments in the UK. This means it is legal for anyone to practice the treatment - even if they have no qualifications or experience. It's up to the buyer of the service (that's you!) to check out the provider to make sure they are appropriately qualified and experienced. Things to ask include:
- Ask if they are registered with a professional body
- Ask for copies of their insurance and check it is up to date
- Ask for any reviews or testimonials, or search them up online or on social media, and see if you can find reviews there.
- Ask for copies of qualification certificates
Remember - any ethical and decent practitioner or business will be more than happy to answer your questions or provide you with this information.
