What is Narcotics Anonymous?

22 April 2021

Narcotics Anonymous is a non-profit fellowship of recovering addicts who meet regularly to help each other stay clean.

How can Narcotics Anonymous help me?

Narcotics Anonymous is a non-profit fellowship of recovering addicts who meet regularly to help each other stay clean.  There is only one requirement for membership: the desire to stop using.

What kind of experience can I expect through your support process?

There are no ‘professionals’ in Narcotics Anonymous. Everyone at an NA meeting is more or less like you.  We are all recovering addicts.  We have found that in our experience there is nothing quite like one addict helping another.  As we say in NA: “the therapeutic value of one addict helping another is without parallel”.

What can I expect from a meeting?

Whether in an online or physical meeting, we suggest that you get to the meeting in good time. Getting there early is giving yourself the ability to settle before the meeting starts. It is also suggested that you let the secretary know when it’s your first meeting, as it gives them the ability to recognise you as a newcomer.  You might notice that some of the meetings are held in church halls, community centres and places similar to this.  However NA is in no way connected with these facilities beyond the fact that we pay them rent for the rooms where the meetings are held.  Meetings are usually structured around the Narcotics Anonymous literature, and recovering addicts sharing their experience, strength and hope around working the program in their lives.

If I wanted to join a meeting, would I have to pay?

There is no required fee – Narcotics Anonymous is a 12 step fellowship that is fully self-supporting through our own contributions.

How do I find out about the meetings in my area and how do I sign-up to join one

The meetings are all listed on the Narcotic Anonymous website: www.na-northernireland.org

How often do you hold meetings?

This will depend on where you live. All NA meetings can be found on the Narcotics Anonymous website: www.na-northernireland.org

Do I get personal support during the process or is it mainly group support?

The support is in the form of group meetings, which are closed meetings available to people who have problems with drugs, that want a new way to live.

Are there any waitlists?

No.
